Jed a traveling minor league baseball player met Genevieve a ballerina/dance instructor near Philadelphia, Pa.. As they grew together through a semi-long distance relationship they looked for creative ways to feel closer. One of these ways was to create a continuation picture, where one would add something to the picture and then hand it off to the other during the next meeting. When Jed considered his proposal he kept this in mind...
Months before the day of the proposal, he worked with a friend to build a 5 foot by 10 foot canvas with a big enough easel to hold it.
Oct. 30th, the day of the proposal, turns out to be perfect weather, which was absolutely crucial for Jed's plan. He began setting up the canvas with Genevieve's Dad, Brother, and Sister, who had just driven 4 hours to meet him. The canvas had to be walked about 300 yards directly out into a field and under a tree across from Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge. Genevieve had no idea her family or Jed's parents, who she was yet to meet, would be there that day. Another part of the plan was to hang ribbons from the lowest hanging branch on the large tree so the canvas could be positioned directly under and behind the ribbons. Each ribbon had a silver ring at the end of it, except for one which had the box containing the engagement ring. Only a red arrow pointing toward the box had been painted on the canvas and two paint brushes with their "pet" names (Lucky and Charm) were on a little marble-topped end table.
Genevieve was planning on meeting Jed in the park for a picnic after her work was over, so she was unaware of the families setting up the scene.
As Jed was nearly prepared for Genevieve a park ranger drove out into the field to try and stop the "erecting of a structure". He took Jed's ID and Genevieve's Dad's as well, claiming that "I understand what you are trying to do, but I don't know if I can help you.". At this point Jed is pleading, saying "I don't have a plan B man, please just let me get this done and we will be out of the way.". As the conversation continued Genevieve's Brother began to recognize the ranger and asked him "Did you go to High School in Johnstown?". The ranger started to look a little more relaxed already as he replied that he went to Ferndale High School in Johnstown. That just happened to be the same high school that both Genevieve and her Brother had attended. So when Genevieve's Dad asked the ranger if he knew Genevieve Adams, he said "Yeah!, we went to school together.", and went from stopping the show to shaking Jed's hand. He said to just make it snappy and congratulations.
So now it was crunch time. Genevieve's Brother and Sister took their places hiding on a nearby hill, so they could get some good pictures of the proposal. Jed went back to the Chapel's parking lot to wait for Genevieve, while Genevieve's Dad joined the other parents in the chapel to wait for their signal.
Genevieve arrived and Jed texted Genevieve's Brother that the "eagle has landed" so he would know that we would be at the tree in a few minutes. One small problem, Genevieve needed to use the restroom, so luckily she decided to go to the gift shop and not into the church. While she was in the bathroom Jed went to text Genevieve's Brother to let him know what the hold up was and gave a quick story about how he was lucky that they didn't go into the chapel. This remained a harmless text even though Jed accidentally sent the text to Genevieve! She didn't see the text and everything was still going as planned. She didn't call him "Lucky" for nothing!
Genevieve and Jed started walking down to the tree, and the canvas was becoming more visible, which Jed covered up with a story about how it was a barricade from an ugly hole in the ground so that the picnic wasn't ruined. Once they reached the tree and Genevieve turned the corner, Jed knelt down to the box that was hanging in front of the canvas and asked Genevieve if she would paint on the canvas with him for the rest of their lives. She replied with tears and a bit of force saying "what is the question?" to which Jed had to clearly state..."Will you marry me?". She said yes and Jed encouraged her to paint her answer onto the canvas with her "Charm" brush. Hugging ensued and Jed had noticed that Patrick and Lydia had come extremely close without being noticed, so Jed told Genevieve to turn around. She hugged her siblings and then Jed told her to look up toward the monument that stood on the other side of the street from the chapel. He directed her to wave up at both sets of parents. The parents trudged down through the field to the canvas where they enjoyed a little chatting and picture taking.
Later on that evening the family ate dinner at Jones Restaurant in Philadelphia and did a Watson's Adventures Haunted Scavenger Hunt as a good ice breaker.
The End...or should I say...The Beginning :)
