After 7 weeks of frustration with feeding and about a month of rash problems, I feel like yesterday I saw the light. We bathed Jonah in just water and put olive oil on his skin. I decided that I was going to experiment on different parts of his body. I put "Johnson's Natural lotion" on his right arm and my mom's homemade salve on his hip areas. I saw a difference in both areas. I started putting it everywhere. Today most of the red is gone, but he is SUPER flaky. I will take flaky compared to red and rashy.
Breast feeding actually felt a little better today. He wasn't clicking the whole time and when he was it didn't really feel painful (just super annoying feeling). There were actually some sucks that were completely pain free (about 4 or 5). It was like he wasn't really doing anything, however, I heard him swallow after, so he was drinking. I long for it to feel that amazing all the time. I'm really hoping for another good day! If it doesn't continue to feel like this I'll be so disappointed. Jonah's 7 weeks old (almost 2 months), I really need to see a progression towards pain free.
So I've come to the realization that I do not have a job that allows me to pump during work hours. I can't leave my students during class (duh!) and my schedule is arranged with no breaks. I've decided that I will supplement with formula and I'm not going to let anyone make me feel bad. My baby is still getting breast milk and I will still pump in the morning. He's still getting all the benefit of breast milk. If I was just using formula and gave up on breast milk, I can see people having an issue with that. I rather have my baby full and happy, then deny him something just because it's not as good as breast milk. I was supplemented with formula and my mom was raised on formula. I think we are both pretty awesomely healthy. He's only getting one or two bottles of formula a day. Maybe even less if I build up my breast milk supply by the time I start with a full schedule in Sept. So I will smack any one (friend or stranger) who try to make me feel bad.
